Upcoming Launch of West African Psoriasis Group

The West African Psoriasis Group (WAPG) gathers dermatologists from French-speaking West African countries that are interested in psoriasis management. The following countries are represented: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo. Although Gabon and Cameroon are countries from Central Africa they are integrated in this group as they are also French-speaking countries. The following table presents the list of WAPG's national coordinators:

Besides the national coordinators, the WAPG includes all members of the national societies of dermatology and venereology of the participant countries. The group also includes students of Dermatology-Venereology.

The West African Psoriasis Group will be officially launched in June 2013, on the occasion of the 1st West African Meeting of Psoriasis. This meeting is an initiative of the WAPG in partnership with the Senegalese Society of Dermatology (SOSEDERM) and will be held in Dakar on June 21-22, 2013. The theme of this meeting will be : "Challenge time for long-term affections in Africa: the example of psoriasis". Several coordinators from different Maghreb psoriasis groups will be invited to share their experience. The participation of representatives from traditional practitioners, phytotherapists and patient associations is also foreseen.

PsorAsia launches PsorCARE programme in Singapore

PsorCARE is the brainchild of the PsorAsia Executive Board and was a result of months of discussions about the pressing needs of psoriasis patients. The support and coaching from healthcare professional was the top priority that emerged from the brainstorming list.

Many patients require a deeper and better understanding of the disease and the treatment options, which can be achieved with improved access to information through healthcare professionals. With professional counseling readily available, patients have the necessary support to better able to manage both the physical and psychological toll from living with Psoriasis.

For patients who require long-term therapy for Psoriasis, treatment adherence – whether it be medical, behavioral, lifestyle or a combination of treatments – is essential for achieving optimal outcomes. Extensive market research has identified that adherence is founded on good communication and a positive relationship between the patient and healthcare practitioners. This also applies to nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals who are in regular contact with patients. Nurses in particular can provide the necessary support that doctors may not have the luxury because of very limited time spent on every consultations. Even if doctors wishes to explain more to patients, they simply have no time.

After the PsorAsiaPacific board met in Singapore last July 2012, we have finally started the PsorCARE program which piloted in Singapore last January 26 and held in Tan Tok Seng Hospital. PsorCARE aims to enhance the communication skills of healthcare professionals (HCPs), such as nurses and pharmacists, who are currently caring for psoriasis patients and strengthen HCP-patient relationships by providing valuable disease and treatment information and emotional and psychological support in collaboration with other allied HCPs and patient support groups.

We are happy to share with you the post event report for PsorCARE. We hope to roll out the same training and workshop in the countries within the year and the succeeding year as a continuing educational program of PsorAsiaPacific.

Update from the Malaysian Psoriasis Registry

The Malaysian Psoriasis Registry

The Malaysian Psoriasis Registry (MPR) is a prospective, ongoing, systematic collection of data on patients with psoriasis. The main reason for setting up a psoriasis registry is to have a more accurate data on the various aspects of psoriasis in Malaysia. Having a psoriasis registry would also help in research work and more importantly in improving the overall management of the patients.

Preliminary work on the MPR started in 1998 by a group of dermatologists, which culminated in the First Malaysian Psoriasis Symposium on the 17th May 1998. A case report form was developed and data collection started as a pilot project in March 2000. A preliminary report of the registry (March 2000 to July 2005) was published in the Malaysian Journal of Dermatology, August 2005 issue.

In 2007, under the guidance of Clinical Research Centre, Malaysia, and with the financial support from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, MPR was extensively revised. A new case report form was introduced and a new centralized electronic database with web application was established to facilitate multi-centre data collection. To date, a total of 18 centres in Malaysia contribute data to the MPR. Preliminary report of the newly revised MPR was published in the Medical Journal of Malaysia in September 2008. The First Annual Report of MPR (2007-2008) was published the following year. All the annual reports, including the latest MPR annual report (2007-2010) are available to be downloaded from our website.

Apart from the annual reports, we have also published our findings in the Malaysian Journal of Dermatology, Malaysian Medical Journal and the Australian Journal of Dermatology. We have also presented our data, either via oral or poster presentations at various meetings and conferences locally and internationally.

In 2011, protocol for Biologic Treatment in Psoriasis was introduced to assist dermatologists in managing patients on biologics in Malaysia. In line with that, we have also introduced the Biologic Registry, which is aimed at evaluating the efficacy and safety of biologics, and also to assess the clinician's adherence to guidelines.

In April 2011, the Malaysian Psoriasis Registry joined the Psoriasis International Network. After 5 years of data collection, there were 8393 patients notified to the MPR. The number is probably under-represented, since the notification is voluntary, and only 18 centres in Malaysia participated. We hope that more centres in Malaysia can collaborate, so that our data can represent the statistics of patients with psoriasis in Malaysia.

Setting up a psoriasis outpatient clinic in Tanta - Egypt

I am very happy to talk to you and feeling proud to join a group from different countries working all together for the sake of our psoriasis patients. I'm Nagwa M. Elwan ,M.D, Prof. of Dermatology, Dermatology Department, Tanta Faculty of Medicine, Tanta - Egypt. I am glad to tell you that in January 2012 I succeeded to set up my psoriasis outpatient clinic in my department, the idea I dreamed since 2 years ago with Prof. Emad El Gamal & Prof. Dubertret when I met them in Alexandria. Their encouragement supported me to fight to achieve my dream of a psoriasis outpatient clinic, separated from our general outpatient clinic in which we see from 400 -500 patients daily of different dermatological diseases.

Tanta, my city (Capital of El Gharbia governorate, in the middle of Delta) & Tanta Faculty of Medicine, where I work, is the only faculty of Medicine in Tanta & Gharbia governorate, serving about 10million people from Gharbia & surrounding governorates.

For our psoriasis patients, I started with some of my junior colleagues, to separate a registry of psoriasis patients from the total patients coming to our outpatient clinic; the registry includes all patient data & addresses. We have a large phototherapy unit, so our work includes follow-up of their phototherapy & their clinical course.

I've communicated with some drug companies to sponsor some suggested activities. First step, they'll provide us with a computer, only for the psoriasis clinic to register everything about our patients. The working days for psoriasis clinic are 3 days per week. One of my suggestedideas is a day-out for our psoriasis patients as a social care & activity.

We've already many researches about psoriasis, we're going to collect & see how our patients can get benefit from them. I've just started a study with some junior colleagues, to assess a new therapeutic modality for psoriasis.

Again, happy to share our ideas for our psoriasis patients hoping to keep in touch.

Turkey founds National Psoriasis Society!

We are pleased to inform you that National Psoriasis Society has been founded in Turkey. The aim of the society is to play an active role in collaboration with Psoriasis International Network, become a national authority of psoriasis and a local driving force for scientific and legal issues.

The first scientific activity of the Society has been accomplished in November 3rd, 2012 at JW Marriott Hotel in Ankara with the attendance of 150 members. The scientific activity was planned during the “Psoriasis Awareness Week”, a week established by the society to include World Psoriasis Day and dedicated to psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients since National Republic Day celebrations overlaps Word Psoriasis Day activities in Turkey.

The scientific programme of this activity was started by the introduction speech of President of the society and followed by a seminar named “Holistic approach to psoriasis” emphasizing the importance of comorbidities in psoriasis and their management. Subsequently, a brainstorm activity was conducted with 18 members in front of the participants and directed by a professor of social science. The main topic of the brainstorm activity was the current status of psoriasis treatment and adressed the questions related to treatment goals and barriers to accomplish these goals and actions need to be taken to overcome these barriers. The last activity of morning sessions was video presentations of interviews with psoriatic patients about the burden of the disease. After lunch break, a press meeting with four faculty members and two psoriasis patients was established to drive the attention of media about the disease. The programme ended with the plenary assembly of the society. We are pleased to acknowledge that the meeting programme has achieved its goals with 14 printed and 60 online news and 1.3 million readers.

It was made to offer a practice tool that helps the diagnosis and therapeutic patient approach. A young Basque woman wins international psoriasis awareness-raising award

126 stories about patients with psoriasis from 18 countries took part in the contest run by the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA)

The award is a recognition to the person who has most contributed to changing the disease's perception

Madrid, 12 December, 2012. Sheila Bravo, from Vitoria, psoriasis patient and a member of the patients' association Acción Psoriasis, has won the international contest “2012 Under the Spotlight Award” as she has been regarded as the person who has better contributed to changing perceptions about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis by telling, in first person, her own experience. The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) set this initiative in motion amongst the 18 countries that are part of the project Under The Spotlight. All users who visited this website were able to freely vote for any of the 126 stories uploaded to the site.

Under the Spotlight is an awareness campaign based on a series of documentaries in which people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis from different countries tell first-hand the impact this disease has borne on their daily routines and how they have managed to defeat a disease that has affected them at a psychological level. Within the framework of this initiative, Acción Psoriasis launched in 2010, supported by Abbott, En Primer Plano, the Spanish version of such project, in which Sheila Bravo took part along with 8 patients from other regions.

In 2012, Acción Psoriasis, with the aim of keeping raising awareness about psoriasis, increased the number of people featuring in En Primer Plano with stories such as Sheila's, which provide a different shade to this initiative. Sheila's determination on fighting psoriasis led her in 2011 to create a blog on this disease with the aim of providing information and contacting more patients who might feel like she did.

The winning personal story for the “2012 Under the Spotlight Award” can be viewed at En Primer Plano together with stories from other patients with psoriasis.

“I am very happy to win this award that was so unexpected and also for being able to show other point of view to everyone affected. My story is the story of many people throughout the world that are also suffering from psoriasis. That is why this award is not only for me, but also for them all. I am really thankful to IFPA because of initiatives such as this one we are able to show society our reality and therefore reach out to more people who are unaware of it. I also say thanks to Acción Psoriasis, the association of people suffering from psoriasis and their relatives of which I am a member, for their great work and the assistance they provide to us. Without them this would not have been possible”, said Sheila when she received the news. This is the third year running in which Spain wins the award. In 2010 and 2011, this award was won by Mercè Vilanova y Celia Marín respectively, thanks to their testimonies, the stories that better conveyed the real impact of psoriasis.

“From Acción Psoriasis we want to thank IFPA and, most of all, every patient affected by psoriasis who, like Sheila, share their experience and help us to give hope and encouragement to other people suffering this disease. We are very happy, especially for Sheila. With initiatives such as Under The Spotlight, society gets to know the real impact of psoriasis”, added Juana María del Molino, President of Acción Psoriasis.

Psoriasis, a disease reaching beyond skin

Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system that is apparent on the skin. It is estimated to affect about 125 million of people throughout the world (approximately 650,000 in Spain and 30,500 in the Basque Country). It is a non-contagious disease which accelerates the growth cycle of skin cells and causes thick scaling areas on the skin. The most frequent variant, called plaque psoriasis, which is suffered by 80% of patients with psoriasis, appears in form of red raised patches topped by white scales that are often pruriginous and painful and liable to crack and bleed. It has no cure at present, but treatment can indeed help to control the process. Treatment may consist on topics, phototherapy or systemic drugs taken orally or through injection or infusion.4

About Acción Psoriasis Acción Psoriasis (www.accionpsoriasis.org) is the national association of people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and their relatives, and has been declared Public Usefulness Entity. Throughout its nineteen years of existence, it has become one of the most active and participative patients' associations in Spain.

Launch of Egyptian Psoriasis Network

On Friday the 9th of November 2012, the members of the Egyptian Psoriasis Network were invited to a meeting organized by Leo Pharma on scalp psoriasis in Cairo. The meeting was attended by around 130 dermatologists from different parts of Egypt.

The Network representative took the opportunity to distribute application forms to join the network. During the 10 minutes talk allowed to us we explained the objectives and strategy of the Network and the efforts exerted during the last 3 years. We announced the launch of our new website in the very near future. The website is egptianpsoriasisnetwork.com. The Network members will receive usernames and passwords so as to start to register their cases through a common questionnaire. We hope that our Network can organize more regular meetings in the future.

Colombian Group of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (ColPsor)

Introduction

The Colombian Group of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (ColPsor) is a non-profit study group gathering dermatologists and rheumatologists interested in promoting psoriasis knowledge and in improving the quality of life of patients suffering from these pathologies.

ColPsor is endorsed by the Colombian Association of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery (Asocolderma), it is a part of the Latin American Society of Psoriasis (Solapso) and it support de Colombian Foundation of Patients with Psoriasis (Fundapso).

Goal

Tha main interest of ColPsor is to encourage dermatologists, rheumatologists, internists, patients and the scientific community as a whole to generate together information on the behavior of the disease in our environment and thus promote an interdisciplinary and participative debate on topics favoring the comprehensive management of psoriasis.

ColPsor is composed of opinion leaders in psoriasis from all over Colombia and it is open to new members and to doctors who share ColPsor's academic interests.

Academic endorsements

ColPsor is part of the Solapso and its delegates to the organization are members of the executive committee of the ColPsor. Solapso fully supports the academic activities of ColPsor, which is the reason why only ColPsor is authorised to organise the Solapso's regional activities in Colombia.

Fundapso has solicited technical and scientific advice from ColPsor's members in order to provide support and therapeutic education to psoriatic patients. As a result, dermatologists and rheumatologists from ColPsor are members of Fundapso's scientific committee.

Activities

During the last 2 years, ColPsor has organized scientific events, supported by Asocolderma, destined to share advances in the understanding of psoriasis with dermatology and rheumatology residents, internists, and dermatologists and rheumatologists from all over Colombia. In the same way, we have promoted and supported events for patients organized by Fundapso.

Symbol

Key concepts: Movement, Surmount, Optimism

This symbol is, on one hand, the abstract representation of some characteristics of psoriasis; on the other hand it communicates some concepts one wishes to relate to the ColPsor group, such as movement and optimism.

The bottom curve line represents the skin surface; the smaller elements, seeming to advance towards the top are the graphic representation of the scales that usually appear when the cells accumulate in the surface. The psoriasis is represented by the graphic elements that move towards the right.

In another way, the graphic elements that appear toward the top also represent a group, union of people wanting to progress a move forward; they transmit strength and dynamism. As such, the same characteristics of the disease make way for something positive; one should not hide the psoriasis but speak of it with clarity in order to surmount it.

Abbreviated name

Colombian Group of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

To make it easy to recognize the group, an abbreviated form of the group's name was created, using the first part of the most significant names of the group's name, Colombia and psoriasis, as to create the short name of ColPsor.

The used colors are black, grey and orange. The color orange was chosen because it conveys vitality, life and optimism.
